Making the cloud your own: Innovation in SAP S/4HANA
What we know about the cloud – including SAP S/4HANA – is that it is intended to simplify our business lives by leaning on standardized processes. As a recovering IT manager, I can tell you there is plenty of room to simplify a business – whether leaders are willing to admit it or not. Still, there are times when a true business requirement requires consideration to augment standard delivered software functionality. What then?
Well, Rizing experienced some of this ourselves as we implemented our SAP S/4HANA Cloud system. And after carefully assessing the costs, benefits, and sustainability of adding to a “plain vanilla” implementation, we opted for one small addition that stood to benefit our organization and our customers.
Here’s our story.
Why SAP S/4HANA?
Rizing implemented SAP S/4HANA Cloud for Professional Services with the goal of achieving the intelligent enterprise, with a single source of data, agile, adaptive, and competitive. Rizing needed to streamline processes and multiple disparate systems that arose as we integrated numerous acquisitions, achieving better data that would lead to strong outcomes.
During the S/4 HANA Cloud implementation at Rizing, our fit-to-standard workshop demonstrated that the standard offering did not meet Rizing’s business requirements for resource planning and forecasting. The majority of professional service offerings use a time dimension of a week to plan and forecast people’s time. SAP S/4HANA supported either daily or monthly dimensions. Week was not available.
Rizing needed to extend the standard delivered SAP S/4HANA Cloud solution without compromising on the benefits from using a public cloud solution. The capabilities offered in the SAP’s Business Technology Platform empowered the team with the right tools to develop the solution for Rizing.
Resource management is a critical component of a professional services framework. It keeps projects running smoothly and helps to ensure on-time and on-budget project delivery. SAP Cloud for Professional Services supports resource planning at a month or day level. However, common industry practice in IT professional services is to track and maintain resourcing on a weekly basis. A month is too high level and daily would take too long to administer – especially for the sort of large SAP transformation projects that Rizing manages.
Rizing built an integrated custom solution with the latest SAP technology which enables project planning, forecasting, and staffing by week instead of daily or monthly. The solution is a UI5 application built on SAP Cloud Platform and is highly integrated with SAP S/4 HANA Cloud via SAP Cloud Platform Integration as well as SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation Cloud Factory. This app has reporting and output capability and automatically pre-populates the condition records for a Customer Project based on Project ID, Work Package, Material Number, and Work Item ID. Identity Authentication Service validates user logins.
This solution enables the company to achieve accurate Revenue Forecasting with easy entry and manipulation of ever-changing plan and resource booking data. It has eliminated unnecessary labor hours for project management – savings that will ultimately be passed onto customers. Moreover, it empowers Rizing to achieve our strategic direction of One Rizing with common standardized and simplified processes across all lines of business and all 13 countries in which Rizing operates. The solution reduces manual tasks for all project managers and resource planners which will lead to improved data quality and smooth project management.
Achieving the optimal experience
Having SAP S/4HANA Cloud as the foundation of our business processes empowers our success as a global professional services firm. But reaching beyond the core solution to include advanced technologies will move Rizing ahead of competitors to ultimately deliver the best experiences for our customers. And that’s where the best-run businesses live.
