Freeport-McMoRan Improved Mobile Asset Management with SAP Service and Asset Manager
Freeport-McMoRan Inc. is the world’s largest producer of molybdenum and a significant copper producer. The company operates the Grasberg mine in Indonesia, the largest gold mine globally. Freeport manages extensive mining operations across the Americas, including major assets like the Morenci minerals district in North America and the Cerro Verde operation in South America.
The company is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona and employs approximately 27,000 people.
Project Background
Paper-based documents have been the standard for a long time in asset-intensive industries. Important asset-related data, from work orders to manuals, gets printed, filled out, and kept in filing cabinets without digital access.
Freeport-McMoRan sought to eliminate this paper-dominated world with SAP® Service and Asset Manager, a mobile asset management app able to integrate with other asset data sources.
Freeport had already implemented SAP Service and Asset Manager at multiple locations and the benefits to field employees highlighted the struggles of managing paper records.
Digitization > Paper Documents
With SAP Service and Asset Manager, field workers and supervisors now access documents and manuals digitally on a wifi-enabled tablet.

- Technicians can access analytics to help accurately spot when an asset may not be working correctly

Solution: SAP Service and Asset Manager
Freeport worked with Rizing to implement SAP Service and Asset Manager, beginning with an intentionally difficult pilot site.
Rizing helped Freeport connect the SAP mobile app to its SAP ERP data, along with with Sharepoint and part-ordering integrations. The pilot site was a success and Freeport is now in the process of rolling it out to all of its mining sites.
